Walt Gonske, originally from Irvington, New Jersey, began his artistic journey at an art school in Newark. His education in art was temporarily halted due to his service in the enlisted reserves, followed by several years working as an illustrator for various advertising agencies. He later resumed his studies at the Frank Reilly School of Art in New York City and subsequently pursued a career as a freelance illustrator in the fashion industry.

In 1971, Walt visited Taos, New Mexico, and was captivated by the region, often referred to as the “Land of Enchantment.” He reflected, “I began to wonder what it would be like to live in northern New Mexico, paint landscapes, and maybe even sell some.” In 1972, he made the pivotal decision to relocate, which he considers to be the wisest choice of his life. Shortly after, he became a founding member of the renowned “Taos Six.”

Walt has received numerous prestigious accolades, including bronze, silver, and gold medals from the National Academy of Western Art in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. His artwork is featured in various museum, corporate, and private collections globally.

Walt Gonske has been highlighted in several prominent publications, including Art of the West in 2010, 2005, and 1996; American Artist in 2003; Wildlife Art in 2002; Modern Art Impressionists in 1992; Southwest Art in 2024; and Contemporary Western Artist in 1982. His enchanting paintings that capture the beauty and diversity of northern New Mexico are the centerpiece of his latest book, “Paintings of the High Desert.”
