Tom Darrah commenced his artistic career at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Fleisher Art Memorial, and the Hussian School of Art. Following his military service, he opted to further his education in the Southwest. He continued his studies at the University of New Mexico, guided by Herman Rose from the Art Student League of New York. During his time at the University, he also had the opportunity to meet and learn from Wilson Hurley.
In the summer of 1978, Tom traveled to Ruidoso, New Mexico, where he developed a deep appreciation for the Sacramento Mountains. Six months later, he and his family moved to Cloudcroft, where he established his studio, the Red Oak Gallery. Soon thereafter, he received commissions from the New Mexico Arts Council to create public works. In 2000, Tom relocated his studio to Ruidoso and has since exhibited his artwork in various galleries across the Southwest. His pieces are part of the permanent collections at the Albuquerque Museum and the Western Heritage Center in Hobbs.
Focusing on contemporary impressionism, Tom is recognized as a modern traditionalist. Viewing art as a lifelong learning endeavor, he later shifted his attention to large figure drawings to convey his perspectives on life and philosophy with renewed insight. He is particularly known for his vibrant, dramatic cloudscapes, portraits, nudes, regional landscapes, and a notably successful mission series.
