Hailing from the Blackfeet Nation in northern Montana, Farrell Cockrum is driven by a deep commitment to convey his Native American heritage through modern artistic expressions. His preferred mediums include painting, sculpture, and mixed media, which he employs to articulate his vision. Cockrum's artistic journey began in the early 1980s at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, where he encountered a wealth of new influences that significantly shaped his artistic development.
As a self-identified “Contemporary Native Modernist,” Cockrum's artwork is characterized by vibrant colors, rich textures, and compelling themes. He holds a deep reverence for traditional art forms, and his faith in the creator is powerfully reflected in his work. His art often pays tribute to Native American warriors, features interpretations of Geronimo’s Cadillac, and explores the significant figure of the Old Man, or “Napi,” who is central to the Blackfeet creation narrative and imparts essential life lessons to the community.
Choosing to remain in the Southwest for its ongoing inspiration and breathtaking landscapes, Cockrum now resides in Albuquerque, NM. There, he continues to honor the traditions of his ancestors, infusing the spirit of the Blackfeet Nation into each of his distinctive paintings.
