From the Blackfoot Nation of northern Montana, Farrell Cockrum’s unrelenting passion is to share the world of his rich Native American heritage through contemporary works of art. Cockrum began his artistic pursuits while studying Fine Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe during the early 1980’s. In Santa Fe, Cockrum was inspired by countless new influences and his considerable talents were showcased through the evolution of his medium. As a self-proclaimed “Contemporary Native Modernist,” Cockrum’s paintings are rich with color, texture, and striking subject matter. Cockrum has a profound respect for traditional forms and his belief in the creator is vividly projected onto his canvas. Cockrum’s captivating subject matters include honored Native American warriors, renditions of Geronimo’s Cadillac, and the evermore provoking embodiment of the Old Man or “Napi,” who plays a key role in the Blackfoot creation story as well many life lessons for the Blackfoot people.
Cockrum chose to remain in the southwest for its continuing inspiration and renewing beauty. Cockrum resides in Albuquerque, NM where he continues to paint the traditions of his native ancestors and capture the spirit of the Blackfoot Nation in each of his wildly unique paintings.
